Segway Ninebot MAX Overview

As a new upgrade for the ES series, the Segway Ninebot MAX improved a lot in performances. It’s capable of a faster riding speed and longer distance. The bigger newly-upgraded tires, along with a smart battery management system and great braking system, ensure a smooth, safe and comfortable ride.

If you’re looking for a scooter for city commutes at a relatively fast speed with impressive distance, the Segway Ninebot MAX is worth your consideration.

Power Performance – Massive Motor and Very Long-lasting Battery

Motor and Speed

If you’re a fan of the Segway brand, you’ll find that all electric kick scooters from the Segway Ninebot pack with less powerful motors. The nominal power of their motors is under 500W (single), with the peak output is no more than 1000W.

Of the Segway kick motorized scooters, the MAX is the most powerful, featuring a 350W motor. As a well-known brand in the scootering industry, the Segway company seems to have a unique way to optimize motor performance.

The manufacturer boasts that the Segway Ninebot MAX is able to reach a fast top speed of 18.6 miles per hour. This top speed is not as fast as those high-speed electric scooters, but still impressive to ride in the city. As users’ tests, this speed is not easy to reach, only when the battery is at least remaining 80%. As long as the battery volume dropped, the riding speed slowed down. That is the biggest drawback most users complained about.

However, riding on the roads with pedestrians at a fast speed increases the risk to hurt both you and other people. So it’s good for you to slow down or even walk the Segway MAX scooter in crowded streets or crossroads.

The Segway Ninebot MAX supports three modes to adjust the riding speed – Energy Saving mode, Standard mode, and Sport mode. You can easily read this information on the display:

“ECO” for Energy saving mode (smooth acceleration, suitable for beginners), “D” for Standard mode, and “S” for Sport mode (powerful, only recommended for skilled riders).

Fast double-clicking the main button allows you to switch between the different modes effortlessly.

Acceleration

Many reviewers complain about the scooter’s acceleration method. You can’t directly accelerate the Segway Ninebot MAX from a zero start to a fast speed. The company limits this ability by using a slow speed to fire the motor engine.

The Segway Max offers a learning start to all the users. You should kick the scooter first and then press the throttle on the right hand to speed up when you’re ready. The motor will kick off for a faster speed when the Segway Max scooter reaches 1.86 mph.

This means that the Segway Max does not feature a zero start mode for acceleration. The manually-kick start will add the total time to accelerate the Max from stillness to 15 mph, making it take about 5.5 seconds. This accelerating speed performs as well as the other popular adult scooter – Xiaomi M365.

Climbing Hills

Thanks to its most powerful motor among the Segway KickScooter series, the MAX is able to climb slopes around 20%, about 11.3 degrees. This ability allows the Segway Max to go uphill and handle potholes easily.

However, just like the users’ complaints about the Xiaomi M365, the speed will be slow down in low teens climbing hills, especially if you weigh 220 lbs of its maximum capacity. If you live in a very hilly area, you might check another option for climbing hills and we’ll recommend them on the alternatives list.

Battery and Range

Not like the Segway ES4 that has two batteries for backup, the Segway Ninebot MAX only features one battery built-in the deck. But the latter still goes further, thanks to its newly-upgraded massive 551-Wh battery.

Packed with a 551Wh big-capacity lithium battery, along with the smart battery management system, the Segway MAX can go as long as 40.4 miles on a single charge. This 40.4-mile distance is a result of the most ideal test circumstance in the eco-mode, making the scooter rank top in the long-range e-scooters.

Coming to the real usage, the range might be shorter based on the rider’s weight and preferrable riding mode. If you prefer to ride in the Sport mode, the battery should be run out in a shorter time. That’s why the company limits the speed based on the remaining battery volume.

The battery management is smart enough to closely monitor the battery status and ensure it’s safe to ride. The system offers multiple protection mechanisms such as short circuit protection, two-way charging, and discharging protection, overcurrent protection, and temperature protection. This will also extend the battery life span.

The Segway MAX scooter supports fast charge, so it just requires about 6 hours to make it full of juice for another 40.4-mile riding.

Ride Quality – Safe and Comfortable

Tire

As a flagship model, the Segway Ninebot MAX comes with two newly-upgraded 10-inch large pneumatic tires. Along with the front and rear wheel shock absorbers, this scooter provides maximum comfort to ride.

Bigger wheels mean more air inside the tires. This ensures the Segway MAX to withstand multiple punctures (less than 6mm in diameter) without tire deflation. The larger tires also absorb more road impact when riding, making sure the scooter is stable for various circumstances – asphalt/flat pavement, wet roads, even on rough surfaces, or speed bumps.

Brake

Faster speeds require longer braking distances or a very efficient braking system. The manufacturer took this into consideration and used a dual braking system in the Segway MAX scooter.

The front-wheel mechanical drum brake offers a gentle and reliable stop. Along with the back wheel regenerative electric brake, the dual brake system provides the greatest stability and sterility for a safe and efficient stop.

Build Quality – Stylish and Solid

It’s no doubt that the Segway MAX scooter has a premium appearance. The looked-high-end grey body, along with a curved deck, the design is obviously very clean and simple. You won’t see much wires outside the scooter, reducing the risk to hook the scooter unexpectedly.

Display

Let’s start with the dashboard. It showed more details on the LED display panel – speed, mode, lights, Bluetooth, pedestrian mode, error, battery level, and power button, adding a few additional information so that you can know more about the scooter when riding.

Like the previous models, you can easily read the speed and remaining battery power information on the display, also including the Bluetooth connection,

Different from the previous models, taking ES4 for example, the Segway Ninebot MAX shows the riding mode – ECO, D, and S, in a more simple way and you can directly know this from the word(s). Lights reminder is also shown on the dashboard. And if your setting for kicking off the scooter is not correct, there is an ‘Error’ tip.

Among all the logos, you’ll see one with one person walking. It’s the pedestrian mode, which is implemented in the Segway MAX scooter and means that you can walk it if the battery burns out.

Design

The Segway Ninebot MAX features a solid construction and a simple clean design. Not like other scooters with some wires outside the body around the stem and handlebar, the Segway MAX scooter just has necessary parts – easily touchable bell and manually controlled brake lever, electric throttle and dashboard.

Made of aluminum alloy, the stem seems strong. The body is a bit bulky, with an upgraded platform providing more standing area. As you may have known, it has two 10-inch large tires, which will make the Segway MAX scooter look a bit sturdier.

But we do like this scooter’s overall build and design and give it a high rating of 9 of 10.

Portability

The Segway Ninebot Max features a folding design. You can easily fold it up in seconds, just press the quick-release lever close to the folding mechanism of the stem and buckle it onto the rear fender. The manufacturer boasts of its effortless carrying on public transportation, but we don’t recommend you to do this. Because the body of the Segway MAX scooter is not light, it weighs up to 42.1 pounds.

But this weight is okay to hold it for few seconds if you want to store it under your desk or in your car. Folding in size of 45.9 (length) x 18.6 (width) x 21.0 in (height), the Segway Ninebot MAX takes few spaces for storage.

Deck

Not only the power specifications upgraded, but the deck is also improved to provide more space for the riders to stand up on the platform with ease. The Segway Ninebot MAX leverages a widened pedalboard that allows two people to stand up at the same time.

To ensure the rider’s safety, the Segway Max scooter makes use of an anti-slippery design to increase contact friction.

An attachable seat is available for the scooter to be a seated electric scooter. But it’s not included in the package by default, you’ll need to buy it separately. If you ride it for long-distance commuting, a seat might be a must-have accessory for a comfortable long-riding.

Lights

The Segway Max scooter has some built-in lights for your safety. The front LED lights, which are designed with 2.5w high-brightness LED light, are used to illuminate the path ahead of you and increase your visibility to others around you. The lights are bright in dark circumstances, making it suitable for commutes to come back home at night. However, it’s not recommended to ride a scooter very late for your safety.

The brake lights on the rear fender remind people following you on the road that you’re going to stop. This avoids other people crash into your scooter and hurt both.

Weight Limit

The Segway Ninebot MAX features a sturdy design, but this does not add any points to its maximum load capacity. All the Segway scooters have a similar and relatively low weight limit, so does the MAX, which supports only 220 lbs adults.

This weight limit is not friendly for big guys who want to try a budget scooter under $1000. Luckily, another budget option – Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost allows a slightly heavier rider. The latter scooter features a 320 lb. weight limit, a good scooter for 300 lbs man.

Waterproof

All the scooters are not real waterproof, because they don’t support full immersion in to the water. The major components – battery in the deck and motor in the rear or front wheel, can be easily damaged as the scooter’s body is not sealed 100% sealed. There is no seamless welding technology used in the scooters.

But this does not mean you can’t ride in the rain, even the manufacturer does not recommend you to ride the Segway Max scooter in rain. You don’t worry much about getting wet as the machine supports IPX5 water-resistance, meaning splashes and dirty water can’t easily damage the scooter. Riding the Segway MAX scooter on wet roads is not a problem!

From the waterproof electric scooters list, you’ll know that this water-resistance level is not low, ranking the second. The only scooter that features a higher water-resistance level is the Emove Curise – IPX6.

Specs vs Segway Ninebot MAX G30LP

The model no. of the Segway MAX scooter is G30. Why do we mention this? Because it has a variant – Segway Ninebot MAX G30LP. Both Segway MAX scooters are very the same, the battery and riding range might be the only difference between them.
