Segway Ninebot ES4 Overview

The Segway ES4 is not the best budget scooter. It’s priced over $700, but not outperforming other scooters in the same price range. However, it still has a few impressive features: foldable and lightweight design, an acceptable fast speed, and a long range.

This makes the scooter is still very appealing for commuters in the downtowns. It’s also a great option for last-mile transportation if the bus stops or stations are a bit far from your office.

Getting around the commuting or meeting your friends in your favorite coffee shop two blocks away is still good. It’s not suitable for extreme outdoor riding on tough roads or trails. The small on-road tires are supposed to be the biggest downside of the Segway ES4 scooter.

Segway ES4 Power Performance – High Speed and Great Range

Motor and Speed

All the Segway scooters pack a less massive sized motor for power, the ES4 is no exception. It features a single motor that only outputs 300W for nominal power. But the hub motor can generate a peak of 800W power for reaching a top speed of 18.6 miles per hour.

Riding on an electric two-wheeler at almost 19 mph is still a bit fast for some experienced riders, not even mentioning the beginners.

Hopefully, to help you get used to the scooter before your first ride, the Segway company provides a few safety instructions on the app for beginners to learn to ride the scooter. You’re required to activate the scooter via the app after learning the skills to maneuver it. Before activation, the Segway Ninebot ES4 will maintain a very low riding speed without full function.

After activation, you can ride the scooter in three modes:

  1. Sport with maximum power and highest top speed with the cost of reduced range;

    2. Standard with moderate power and speed with a relatively moderate range;

    3. Speed limit (not the one before activation) with minimum power and speed to reach the longest range. Switching between these three modes by double click the power button. An “S” icon is shown on the display for indication: Red “S” for Sport mode; White “S” for Standard mode and no “S” for speed limit mode.

    Acceleration

The Segway Ninebot ES4 does not support zero starts, so the acceleration may take slightly more time. The scooter limits that you should glide for a minimum of 1.8 mph speed to use the electric throttle for speeding up. All Segway scooters have this setting, including its 2020 flagship – Segway Ninebot MAX.

    Climbing Hills

Not having a name among the most powerful scooters, the Segway Ninebot ES4 is still able to climb uphills of around 15% – about 8.5 degrees, thanks to its 300W optimized motor. This is also good for people who live in hilly areas with gentle slopes.

Based on real tests, it can handle steep and long uphills for people who even live in a neighborhood that is at the top of a series of hills or just one big hill in the city. But climbing steep hills may be at the cost of reducing the riding speed, which is also tied to motor performance.

    Battery and Range

As an upgrade scooter from its siblings, the Segway ES4 scooter is capable of going a further distance, thanks to its dual battery system.

There is one built-in battery in the stem for normal riding like short-distance commuting or getting around the community. Whenever you need to ride a scooter for a longer distance, the second detachable battery now adds the battery power for riding further.

Thanks to the dual battery with a total of 374 Wh, the Segway is able to ride as far as 28 miles on a single charge. Dual batteries mean doubled charging time, about 7 hours.

With the default charging port on the stem covered by the upgraded additional battery, the Segway ES4 is charged via the new pass-through port that you can find under a flap on-top of the expansion battery. Above that port is a new button that when pressed, will light up to four LEDs to indicate the remaining charge level in this particular battery.

Ride Quality – Less Comfortable but Safer

The Segway Ninebot ES4 has two small tires, even compared to most common and cheap models. The front is 8-inch while the rear is even smaller 7.5-inch. This is another disadvantage of the ES4 compared to the MAX, which features two large 10-inch wheels.

Both are solid non-pneumatic tires, meaning that you will feel every little bump on the roads. They are better to ride on flat and smooth city roads without any potholes, not even mentioning the off roads scootering.

But this is impossible, as you know. Fortunately, the scooter has built-in front and rear shock absorbers which give you a really nice ride. However, it’s not a good idea to test this to go over any serious cracks or bumps. Just remember the rear and front suspensions work great to provide you with a comfortable ride even at its high speed.

The combination of electric brake and mechanical brake enables you to have a safe ride on the Segway ES4 scooter. They work efficiently together to achieve the maximum braking capability for emergency stopping when need.

    Build – Premium Look

You can always make a clear distinction of the Segway scooters from other e-scooters in the design and appearance. They come in a clean and simple design, non-adjustable but wide and strong stem with the display on top the junction part with the handlebar, thin and curved deck connected perfectly to the rear wheel. The whole outlook of the Segway scooters looks like a piece of art.

The stem is designed sturdy and solid for two guessed reasons: one is the built-in battery located here for power – this upper location reduces the risk of battery components getting wet on wet roads; the other is that you can hold much weight on the hands – better than those scooters with a heavy deck that seems to need more strength for holding in the hands.

    Portability

Designed for city commuting and last-mile transportation, the Segway company always takes the scooter’s portability into consideration. The Segway ES4 is foldable for easy carrying and storage on the bus or train.

After folding up, the dimensions of the Segway ES4 are 45 inches in length and 17 inches in width, and 16 inches in height, ultra-compact enough to store under your desktop or even under the seat on the train without taking much space in crowded.

It weighs about 31 pounds (12 kg), very lightweight for one-hand carrying. After it’s folded up, simply lift it by the stem to carry wherever you go.

Folding and unfolding are very easy.

Step on the folding pedal while pushing the handlebar forward slightly. Then fold the handlebar down until it locks into the rear fender. You may hear a ticking sound when the folding latch buckled to the rear fender.

    Deck

Featuring a polished non-slip texture on the deck surface, the Segway ES4 allows the ride to have a stable standing up on the scooter even at high-speed riding.

The deck is spacious for the riders to put two feet on it. But if you prefer to have your left foot on the rear fender to take action for a manual foot brake, the right foot might have more space on the scooter. It’s not recommended to have two riders on the scooter, for its weight limit is not good enough for that.

The deck and conjunction to the rear wheel look like one complete piece to make the unity 100%. But this means that the height from the ground to the deck is very low, giving the Segway ES4 a bad clearance.

Talking about the deck part, we would like to mention the detachable seat, which is sold separately and available on Amazon. Yes, the Segway ES4 is also a scooter with a seat. Considering its great mileage performance, it’s very understandable that the company designed this type of accessories to save your effort.

    Lights

The Segway ES4 upgrades its light system. Besides the common front headlamp, rear braking light, there are atmosphere lights with customizable colours for your mood.

The built-in bright LED headlights toward the front illuminate the path ahead of you to ensure you have a safe ride even in low light conditions.

The sidelights increase your visibility to others around you. They are adjustable to suit your style and mood.

The rear light is for braking to remind others following you not to run into a crash when you need to stop. It’s generally in red color.

    Is Segway Ninebot ES4 waterproof?

No, even it features a water-resistance rating of IP54, which is the basic entry-level for the scooter to be safe from water splashes.

In most cases, the manufacturer would suggest you not ride the scooter on wet roads or on rainy days, as most scooters are waterproofing and might get damaged in wet conditions. Just keep in mind that protect the battery components and motor from water to keep your scooter from being water-damaged, as most companies won’t provide any warranty for this case.

Is Segway ES4 scooter good for heavy riders?

Not really. According to the manufacturer, the Segway Ninebot ES4 is just able to load a maximum capacity of 220 lbs, not good for big guys.

However, some riders said that they can even ride on the scooter with a weight of 300 lbs. Of course, heavy people can ride on a Segway ES4 at the cost of a slower speed and the ability to climb the hills, even the range that you can go at most.

If you’re slightly heavier than the weight limit, for example, 250 lbs, it’s okay. But if you’re heavier than 300 lbs, a scooter with a higher weight limit of over 300 lbs might be a good choice.
