Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost Overview

The Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost is a great but a budget option for big guys to use for commuting or last-mile transportation. It supports a very high weight limit and is very suitable for adults over 300 pounds. It is able to ride at a relatively high speed, good for commuters to get to the office as fast as possible. The lightweight body can be easily carried by anyone. Don’t worry about the mileage, even the distance is not as far as those long-range electric scooters, but it just takes a very short time to fully juice.

The most important and appealing point is the price. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on an entry-level scooter, it is sometimes on sale at a cheap price under $300 on Amazon, where the most affordable and inexpensive electric scooters are listed for sale.

Power Performance – Less Powerful but Still High Speed

Motor and Speed

The Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost packs an upgraded hub motor for generating a stable 300W output power that enables the scooter to reach a fast top speed of 18 miles per hour. However, the true riding speed may vary based on the rider’s weight and road conditions.

To ride the Swagger 5 Boost at this highest top speed, you should choose Gear 3, which is the only mod that allows the scooter for this speed.

If you choose the other two mods – Gear 1 and Gear 2, the maximum riding speed is 5 mph and 10 mph separately. If you want to switch gears between 1, 2, and 3, just quickly press the power button once, after you have turned on the scooter.

Based on the tests, a rider weighing about 175 pounds is able to reach the 18 mph top speed consistently on a full battery on the Swagger 5 Boost, mostly ridden it on flat roads or very slight downhill asphalt/concrete terrain.

Acceleration

You can not directly speed up the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost from zero starts to reach a desired high speed. It’s a typical kick-off electric scooter and you need to keep one foot (generally the left one) and then glide it to begin accelerating manually. After having two feet stand on the scooter, use the handles to steer for acceleration.

It’s much easier to reach the 18 mph speed on flat roads.

Hill Climbing

The manufacturer didn’t state the maximum incline degree that the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost is able to conquer. But in the part of the terrain, the company suggests riding ramps under 20-degree. Supposedly, the Swagger 5 Boost is able to climb hills of 20-degree, which is relatively steep enough even in the hilly cities.

However, the true results might be very disappointing. When testing on a slightly steep slope no more than 10-degree, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost does not perform well as promised, even while the speed slows down to around 12 mph. Some friends comment that riding it on very low-grade hills is okay with average speed performance.

Battery and Range

Even the manufacturer boasts of its battery is able for long-lasting, the actual mileage of the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost is not as competitive as those electric scooters at its price range. Powered by a 270 Wh battery, the 11-mile on a single charge is the official data from the company. You shouldn’t always buy this as the real riding conditions might vary depending on every rider’s special case.

But if you use it for short-distance commutes and getting around the community or the last-mile transportation from the bus stop or train station to/from home or office, it is good enough to meet your needs.

Luckily, you can always recharge it fully for another 11-mile riding ideally in 3.5 hours. It’s better to charge it when the battery level is not as low as zero. The battery level indicator will show you how much battery life you have left. When the battery level is low, stop riding, turn off the scooter, and fully recharge it before riding again.

Ride Quality – Not that comfortable but very safe

The ride on the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost can’t be counted into the most comfortable one, but is still acceptable, thanks to the 8.5-inch rubber air-less honeycomb tires. Large and fat tires will reduce the bumps on the roads, but not the solid rubber tires, while most low-priced electric scooters come with tires in this size and type, like the Xiaomi M365.

For the best ride quality, you may try to ride it on as smooth and flat surfaces as possible as you can. Otherwise, you will feel every small bump or pothole on the roads. The Swagger 5 Booster is just suitable for city roads, not good at handling off-road riding.

But the good point is that the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost features a disc brake, which is the best braking on an electric scooter. Moreover, the rear disc brakes are combined with the AutoGuard, which ensures every safe trip on the Swagger 5 Boost scooter.

Build – Solid and Strong for Heavy Riders

Positioning as an entry-level kick electric scooter for commuting and last-mile transportation, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost features a very classic design that you can see on other inexpensive models – simple and clean, but with a few wires shown up around the handlebar and the folding mechanism.

The handlebar is very important to maneuver the scooter, as the controlling parts are placed here – like the throttle for speeding forward and the brake for efficient stop. Display with battery level and the speedometer is located at the conjunction of the handlebar and the stem so that you can conveniently know the information.

Portability

The company took its portability into consideration when designing the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost. It’s ultra-lightweight – only 26 lbs, making it easy for the riders to carry it around on a bus or train.

It’s foldable. Folding and unfolding the scooter is very easy. Unlock the latch by turning the collar counterclockwise and fold the latch down, then pull the stem down towards the deck to line up the handlebars with the rear bumper so that the lock connects to the hook. In this way, you can hold the stem for carrying it wherever you go.

It’s compact after folding up, with dimensions of 41.5 x 17 x 19 in., meaning that you can effortlessly store it under your desk and in the car trunks.

When you want to unfold it for riding, just move the lock so that it detaches from the Hook and pull the stem up away from the deck, then fold the latch-up towards the stem and turn the collar clockwise to lock it.

Deck

To provide you a safe standing platform, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost has a non-slip deck with a textured surface, which gives you more grip power on the scooter.

The deck is also spacious enough for the riders to put both feet on it. If not, the smooth connection to the rear fender provides extra room for you to put the left foot on it. This also allows you to implement additional braking power if any emergency happens.

The charging port is located on the left side near the kickstand. This means that the battery components are placed in the deck, and you should pay attention to not getting the deck wet.

Lights

Cheap electric scooters generally come with the basic lighting system – the headlights on the front and rear lights. But different from most, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost’s rear lights will have two kinds of function – braking and tail.

The taillight will automatically on and blink for increased visibility when the headlight is turned on – just quick press the power button twice to turn the headlight on or off.

When you need to use the brake for slowing down or stop, the taillight will turn red automatically to remind other people around you.

Is Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost waterproof

No, but it’s water-resistant. It features an IPX4 rating, which is very entry-level for waterproofing in the scootering industry.

Scooters at this water-resistant level are good to ride on slightly wet roads, but not suitable in the rain, or going through the deep puddles.

Is Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost good for heavy riders

Yes. It features a very high weight limit of up to 320 lbs, meaning that a big man over 300 pounds can facilely ride the scooter without reducing its speed and range performance.

Generally speaking, the scooter is able to carry a slightly heavier rider, supposedly the 350-lb adults are good to ride on the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost.
